The concept
for the "Fünf-Höfe"-project of the Hypovereinsbank
Munich (architects: Herzog & de Meuron) consisted of a huge sphere
(diameter: 10m) made out of polished stainless steel strips hanging
in one of the inner courtyards. The geometrical pattern of the strips
refers to a complexe mathematical system known as the Ammann-lines.
Due to several technical and logistic problems the whole sphere had
to be constructed on the roof alongside the inner courtyard. For that
purpose a special underframe with a tower and a sphere made out of
steel had to be designed and constructed. Then, the workers had to
weld the strip parts together while climbing on the underframe. After the completion
of the outer sphere the inner framework was removed.
A huge crane positioned the sphere in the inner courtyard approximately
3m above the heads of the pedestrians.
