The origins of chateausm can be found in the Hammerstrasse 133 in Basel (Switzerland), to be more precise in a (flat-sharing) community around Maxime Boillat, Michael Heimann and Pat Kalt that emerged in the mid-ninties in the context of poststructuralistic theories, regular gastronomic cooking enjoyments, musical preferences and bonds of friendship. The namesake for chateausm was a small plastic building (the chatêau) with integrated alarm clock. In fact, the chatêau was more like a mosque and the integrated alarm was the wake-up call of the muezzin (allah akbar).

chateausm defined itself right from the beginning as a community of people with similar bias and philosophy of life rather than an association with rules and statutes. chateausm is way of thinking, a way of living and a way of enjoying, thus friends and satellites of chateausm can be found all around the world. chateausm is a laboratory for rhibozomatics (derivated from the philosophical term rhizom and from the biological term ribosom) and gratinology (the gratin as synecdoche for good life & food). chateausm is constantly rebuilt.

Amongst the activities of chateausm in the past years there had been numerous events, partys, cooking sessions and gastronomic reunions. chateausm is dependent on the commitment of its people, thus no allegiance is necessary. There is no way, but a track.
